Sweet, spicy, and tangy Pineapple Gojju or Menaskai is a Udupi Mangalore side delicacy often served in family functions as a side dish for Rice. Can be had with Dosa and Idli too.


This Gojju or Menaskai can be prepared with Pineapple, Raw Mango, Bendekayi, or Hagalakayi too. Narrated in Kannada.

Ingredients:

Pineapple - 1 and 1/2 Cups chopped.
Oil - tsp
Bengal Gram - 1 Tbsp
Urad Dal or White Lentils - 1 Tbsp
Fenugreek Seeds - 1/4 tsp
Coriander Seeds - 3 tsp
Cumin Seeds - 2 tsp
Sesame Seeds - 3 tsp
Bydagi Red Chilies - 5-6
Fresh grated Coconut - 1 Cup
Jaggery - 3-4 Tbsp
Salt

Seasoning Ingredients:

Coconut Oil - 1 tsp
Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
Curry Leaves - 5-6

Method:

1. Add 1 tsp Coconut Oil to a pan.

2. Once Oil is hot, add 1 Tbsp Bengal Gram and roast the same.

3. Add 1 Tbsp Urad Dal or White Lentils and roast it with Bengal Gram.

4. Add 1/4 tsp Fenugreek Seeds and roast.

5. Add 3 tsp Coriander Seeds.

6. Add 2 tsp Cumin Seeds and roast it.

7. Once all these ingredients are turned golden, add 3 tsp Sesame Seeds and roast.

8. Add 5-6 Bydagi Red Chilies.

9. Once the Red Chillies are roasted transfer all the ingredients to a bowl, else it will be more roasted if you keep that in the same pan.

10. Add 1 Cup fresh grated Coconut to a mixer grinder.

11. Now add the roasted ingredients.

12. Add little water and grind to a smooth paste; Keep aside.

13. Add 1 Cup Water to a pan.

14. Add 1 and 1/2 Cup chopped Pineapple.

15. Cook till the Pineapple turns soft.

16. Once Pineapple pieces cooked properly add Salt per taste.

17. Add 3-4 Tbsp Jaggery. Mix and cook it well.

18. Pineapple pieces should absorb Salt and Jaggery.

19. Add the ground paste to the pan and cook well.

20. Add 8-10 Curry Leaves and mix well.

21. Finally add finely chopped Coriander Leaves and mix once and switch off the flame.

22. Seasoning has to be done for this Gojju.

23. Add 1 tsp Coconut Oil to a small frying pan.

24. Once the Oil is hot, add 1 tsp Mustard Seeds.

25. Once Mustard Seeds splutter, add 5-6 Curry Leaves and roast them.

26. Add this seasoning immediately to the prepared Gojju and mix well.
