Mastering wet-on-wet techniques with watercolor painting (Part 3 - Subtractive washes)

Описание к видео Mastering wet-on-wet techniques with watercolor painting (Part 3 - Subtractive washes)

Wet-on-wet techniques can be daunting, especially for beginner watercolorists. In this 3 part video series, I will break down every single problem one can encounter when working with the wet paint, and demonstrate the fool-proof techniques to avoid them, in order to achieve the desired effects - whether that's smooth transitions, soft edges or runny effects.

Part 3 of this course focuses on "Subtractive washes" which refers to the techniques of removing paint from paper before it fully dries up. These techniques can be effective in carving out intricate outlines, creating visual highlights and creating soft edges for white/light objects. Subtractive techniques are less known than the typical "wet-on-wet" techniques, hence I will first demonstrate what they are and how you go about it, and then demonstrate what can possibly go wrong while applying them. The key to "subtractive washes" is determining the optimum time for removing the paint. It's built upon the foundational skills of building and judging the right paint consistency and wetness, as we have covered in the previous two classes. I have linked them below:
Part 1 - Adjacent washes:    • Mastering wet-on-wet techniques with ...
Part 2 - Additive Washes:    • Mastering wet-on-wet painting techniq...

This video is broken into the following chapters. Feel free to jump to the portion that interests you the most:
00:00 Part 3 intro
00:41 Paint lifting & scratching
05:07 Mistakes of paint lifting & scratching
06:47 Dripping & combining multiple subtractive methods
08:22 Mistakes of dripping and combining multiple subtractive methods
10:28 Class recap

Disclaimer: I have made every single mistakes demonstrated in this course and I continue to make them to make them to this day. This video series is definitely not about making you feel bad about your mistakes, but rather, developing awareness of how the mistakes occur and why, so that in your practice, you can identify them in advance, prevent them from happening or lower the frequency of your mistakes. Overcoming mistakes while making friends with them is a rewarding and everlasting journey!
