ગોપી ગીત (Cries for Krishna)

શ્રીમદ્ ભાગવત મહાપુરાણના દસમા સ્કંધના પૂર્વાર્ધના એકત્રીસમા અધ્યાયમાં ગોપી ગીતના સુપ્રસિદ્ધ શ્લોક આવેલા છે. ભગવાન શ્રીકૃષ્ણે ગોપીઓને પ્રેમની ઊચ્ચોચ્ચ અવસ્થાનો અનુભવ કરાવવા રાસલીલા કરી હતી. જ્યારે ભગવાનને થયું કે ગોપીઓ હજી એમને સર્વભાવે સમર્પિત નથી થઈ ત્યારે એમના પ્રેમને પ્રબળ બનાવવા તેઓ અદૃશ્ય થઈ ગયા. ભગવાનને ન જોતાં બેબાકળી બનેલી ગોપીઓ એમને શોધવા પોકારો પાડવા લાગી. ગોપીઓના વિરહવ્યથિત પ્રાણના પ્રેમપોકારો એ જ ગોપી ગીત.

શ્રીમદ્ ભાગવતના ભાગરૂપ મૂળ સંસ્કૃતમાં રચાયેલ આ શ્લોકોને સુપ્રસિદ્ધ સંત સાહિત્યકાર શ્રી યોગેશ્વરજીએ ઈ. સ. ૧૯૫૩માં અનુવાદિત કરેલા. જે પાછળથી એમના 'ગોપી પ્રેમ' પુસ્તકના ભાગ રૂપે પ્રસિદ્ધ થયેલા. ઈ.સ. ૨૦૦૩ માં પૂ. મા સર્વેશ્વરીની પ્રેરણાથી સુપ્રસિદ્ધ ગાયક બેલડી આશિત અને હેમા દેસાઈના સ્વરમાં એને 'પૂજાના ફૂલ' આલ્બમ માટે સ્વરબદ્ધ કરવામાં આવ્યા. નિત્ય પાઠ કરતા ભક્તજનોના લાભાર્થે અહીં એને વિડીયોના સ્વરૂપમાં પ્રસ્તુત કરવામાં આવ્યા છે. આશા છે એ સૌને ઉપકારક ઠરશે.

Gopi Geet (Gopi Gita) is part of Srimad Bhagavat. It is contained in the first half of book ten, chapter 31, verses 1 to 19 of Bhagavat Purana.

In these nineteen tender verses, Gopis, female consort of Lord Krishna, narrates his glory at the time of his disappearance during the Rāsa play. Sri Krishna planned Rāsa lilā (Rāsa -a popular dance carried out by men and women together in circle and lilā - a divine play) to lift Gopis' to a higher spiritual state. However, Lord Krishna was perturbed by the introvert pursuit of Gopis and in order to teach them a lesson, he disappeared deep into the forest.

When Gopis did not find Krishna, they became breathless. Bemused Gopis' looked all over, but in vain. Then, with their body, mind and soul in unison with Krishna's memories, they arrived at the banks of river Yamuna. Immersed in his unfathomable love and earnestly longing for his heavenly vision, Gopis' started singing the glory of his divine grace and the very tunes became known as Gopi Geet - cries for Krishna.

Shri Yogeshwarji, noted Gujarati saint and literate, translated these beautiful verses of Bhagavat written in Sanskrit for the benefit of Gujarati people. In 2003 legendary singer duo Ashit and Hema Desai lend voice to Yogeshwarji's poetic rendering of Gopi Geet in Gujarati in an album titled 'Pooja Na Phool'. With their enchanting voice and spellbound music, they made it immortal. Extraordinary in composition and full of divine meaning, Gopi Geet is a feast to ears.
