J&K: Talat Majeed, former Jama’at-e-Islami member joins Assembly Elections

Dr Talat Majeed, a former member of the banned Jama’at-e-Islami J&K, is contesting the Pulwama Assembly constituency as an independent candidate in the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. Historically, Jama'at-e-Islami members have adhered to a policy of non-participation in elections, a stance maintained since 1987. The party was also part of the separatist Hurriyat Conference from 1993 to 2003, during which it advocated for election boycotts.
However, there has been a significant shift recently, with several ex-members of Jama'at-e-Islami entering the electoral arena across the Kashmir Valley, signalling a broader political realignment. Dr Majeed’s candidacy highlights this evolving dynamic and represents a departure from traditional norms. His independent run underscores a transformation in local political strategies, as former members seek to address pressing issues in their constituencies while navigating a complex political landscape.
This shift became evident during the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year, when several Jama'at leaders cast their votes. Now, even jailed hardliners from the group are emerging in the political scene as independent candidates for the Assembly polls, further emphasizing the strategic change within the region's political fabric.
