ABSTRACT:

CPD is mandatory for revalidation and continued registration for all UK HCPs. It should constitute a continuous process of updating one’s clinical and professional knowledge, to reflect the changing needs both of patients and one’s healthcare service. Linked with appraisal, CPD is also essential for revalidation, which requires healthcare professionals (HCPs) to demonstrate their fitness to practice on a regular basis.

CPD should be achieved via a balance of external and internal learning, which may be participatory or individual. The medical, nursing and pharmaceutical councils define and list CPD requirements. The Royal Colleges also provide guidance for members. Evidence of learning and reflection should be recorded by individual HCPs for each learning activity. Reflection on learning is key, with any changes made as a result and further identified learning needs included in all CPD records.

Educational events and online education can be CPD accredited, meaning that the educational activity has been assessed and peer-reviewed. Royal College accreditation is a credible kite mark for sponsored educational events. However, CPD credits and certificates are not evidence of learning in themselves.
