Are Infidelity and Addiction Abusive to Loved Ones?

Kristin Snowden, MA, LMFT, CDWF is a seasoned therapist who specializes in betrayal trauma, addiction recovery, and helping individuals/couples navigate relationship crises. While most everyone understands that addiction can be harmful and infidelity can devastate a relationship, there is an entire unknown level of harm that occurs underneath the betrayer/addict’s behaviors that can cause deep, hard-wired betrayal trauma to their loved ones (ie spouse, family, friends, etc). Kristin explains the the behavioral patterns that exist when one is engaging in an affair or secret, double life of addiction (including sex and porn addiction) where the betrayer often lies to their loved ones, minimizes their behavior and it’s consequences on their loved ones, blames the partner for marital issues, gaslights, and dodges accountability and responsibility for his/her choices. These behaviors can be just as devastating to the betrayer/addict’s loved ones as the addiction/affair itself, leading the loved ones to feel deeply confused, lose connection with their instincts and intuition, and feel like they’re “going crazy”—unable to fully understand what’s really going on in the relationship dyad. This emotional abuse must be understood and processed by both the betrayer and the betrayed as they move toward healing and recovery. Kristin provides insight and looks to help individuals and couples heal after infidelity and addiction.
