For 1964, the Impala was restyled to a more rounded, softer look. The signature taillight assembly had an "upside-down U" shaped aluminum trim strip above the taillights, but the individual lights were surrounded by a body-colored panel. The 409 cu in V8 engine returned as the big-block option, as well as the Rochester 2X4-barrel carburetors setup for the 425 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 425 lb⋅ft at 4,200 rpm of torque engines. SS models continued to feature the engine-turned aluminum trim. Rooflines were carried over from 1963 unchanged. Back-up lights were standard.

The AMT 1964 Chevrolet Impala SS model car is an interesting model kit. Originally introduced in 1964 as part of the AMT Advanced Customizing Series model car kits and designed by the AMT design team of Bill Cushenbury, George Barris, the Alexander Brothers, Dean Jefferies and Gene Winfield.

Changes between the first issue of this kit and the 1990 version (This kit) include the removal of the optional steel wheels and Halibrand mag wheels with knock offs which were traded for late 1960's era 5 spoke mag wheels. The disc brake and jack stand were also removed. The interior lost the custom steering wheel, shoulder harness, 2-piece roll bar and fire extinguisher. The custom hood scoop is missing, as is the drag racing tow bar and the original kit had parts to light up the head and tail lights. All of those parts are long gone.

Let's look at these parts a little closer. You get a great representation of the 1964 Chevrolet 409 cu in engine in stock configuration. The engine block have a right and left hand side engine/transmission with a separate oil pan. You get the intake manifold, distributor, oil filler pipe, carburetor, cylinder heads, valve covers, exhaust headers, fan belt / pulleys / alternator with mounting bracket, fan and air cleaner as separate pieces. Radiator support wall is molded into the body and the radiator glues onto the wall. Firewall and battery are also included under the hood.

The drag racing 409 cu in engine sharers the stock engine block right and left hand side engine/transmission pieces but has a chrome oil pan. You get the 6-71 blower intake manifold, 4-piece blower body, 2-piece blower scoop, custom finned valve covers, distributor, custom exhaust headers, chrome front engine cover, and blower belt assembly as separate pieces.

The chassis and running gear of the AMT 1964 Chevrolet Impala SS Model Kit consist of a one piece chassis pan with all the running gear and exhaust pipes molded in place. You have a choice of two wheel types, stock hubcaps or American Racing Mags. Axle blocks with two sets of holes allows you to have a stock ride height or build a lowrider.

The interior is a bucket mixed with individual parts. For example, the floor pan, rear side panels and bench seat are molded as a unit. Steering column with wheel, dash board, bucket seats and chrome floor shifter make up the stock interior. Custom interior features a pair of 4-piece bucket seats, custom floor shifter and a tachometer. The race version includes a shoulder harness for the driver and a 4-piece padded roll bar. There is also a one piece glass for windshield and rear window and a rear view mirror.

For the body AMT gives you a removable hood. Also included in the custom pieces are a pair of replacement chrome grilles, grille shell, rear rolled pan, racing hood scoop, dual antennas, spotlights and twin sport mirrors.

The rest of the parts on the 1964 Chevrolet Impala SS model car are all pretty much chrome and glass. Expect a lot of non-plated chrome moldings on this car and expect to use either the kit supplied chrome panels and Bare Metal Foil to finish the rest. I know it's a lot of work, but the finished result will be worth it!
