Amahoro, 34th birthday. (12/09/24) - Zoo Antwerpen (B) - Zoovenirs (75)

12/09/24 - Today, female gorilla Amahoro celebrates her 34th birthday.
Amahoro is an Eastern Lowlands gorilla. One of the few still living in a zoo. There's no breeding program for this subspecies anymore.
Her company of Mayani with daughter Thandie and Mambele with daughter Vizazi belongs to the Western Lowlands gorilla subspecies. Amahoro has always been a caring 'auntie' to the 2 girls. They completely trust it to be around her.
Now that leader Matadi is gone, Amahoro is much more at ease and takes her time to enjoy treats and food. Before, she respectfully kept her distance from the family group.
On one of my earlier gorilla videos, l got a comment from a lady who was one of the caretakers after the rescue mission in 1993 to free the baby gorilla from poachers.
She was happy to see Amahoro is doing so well. She told me Amahoro means 'peace' in Kinyarwanda, the local language spoken in Rwanda (Africa). I think that name suits her very well.
As l don't have the opportunity today to visit the zoo, l selected photos and video clips from visits during passed years and added a few recent ones.
