It is absolutely vital to understand this difference, to internalize it, because it shifts the entire narrative from one of rejection to one of escape. If you were what we call a high-value Supply, someone who met all their needs—intellectually, emotionally, physically—and you were that complete, all-encompassing presence for them, then this message is especially for you.
So, let's unpack what's really going on here. Let's break down the mechanics behind their actions, because once you see the machine, you stop blaming yourself for how the gears turn.
At its heart, a Narcissist is trapped inside a pathological loop. And when we say 'pathological,' we mean it’s an unhealthy, deeply ingrained pattern of behavior rooted in a disorder. This isn't just a bad habit; it's the very operating system of their personality. Because this cycle is fundamental to who they are, it's something they are incredibly unlikely to ever break free from. And this is how that loop works.
What does a Narcissist do? They use tactics of manipulation. During the discard phase, they will deliberately try to confuse you and use every strategy in their book to throw you off balance. The reason they treat you so horribly at the end is that they want you to be obsessively thinking about them, trying to figure out what on earth is happening. This confusion, this frantic search for answers, is a form of supply in itself. It keeps them centered in your universe even after they’ve physically left.
When they move on to a new Supply, it's important to know that this person is often someone they keep on the back-burner, a person they can always circle back to after a breakup. A Narcissist very rarely finds a genuinely new source of Supply. They might have done that when they first met you, but that was likely a time when they were desperate and had to put in a monumental effort to win you over.
