Reverse Osmosis Use for Cannabis Production

Professor DeBacco

Reverse Osmosis Basics
Reverse osmosis is a filtration method than can remove up to 95-99% of dissolved salts in any water sample.
As a result it is the most common option for desalinating water on a large scale.
Reverse osmosis uses high pressure to force water through a semi-permeable membrane which results in salts on one side of the membrane and pure water on the other side.
However, this process can be wasteful if access to water is limited.
The typical ratio is 6:1 with six parts being fed into the system for every 1 part (of pure water) produced.

Why Remove Minerals?
RO water will have essentially no minerals.
This allows growers to now control what is added to the water.
If RO water is fed directly to plants than a Ca and Mg deficiency is likely.

RO Water Process
Stage 1 = Sediment Filter
Stage 2 = Carbon Filter
Stage 3 = Impurities removal
Stage 4 = Post carbon filter
