Furore over dancing girl fresher shows Kashmir’s toxic politics of vice & virtue still holds power

Last week, video of a woman student dancing at the Government Medical College in Anantnag led to outrage on social media—showing the toxic politics of religious identity that brought Kashmir to its knees in 2008 is still alive. Ever since the late colonial era, religious fundamentalists have argued Hindu India, and modernity, pose a threat to Kashmir’s religious character. Fixing the problem needs a Naya Kashmir—but also a new India.
