Elections to Jammu and Kashmir’s legislative assembly looming in the horizon, the banned Jamaat-e-Islami says its wants to join the democratic mainstream. The party fought elections in the past, but also helped build the Islamist movement which culminated in the long jihad from 1988. Letting the Jamaat back in could counter Kashmiri nationalism—but only at the cost of legitimising something far more toxic.
