[email protected] how to reshape a standard "center crease/ pinch front" fedora into a pork pie hat.

Reshaping the crown of a felt hat requires a good source of steam,
a "jiffy steamer" is what I'm using here, it's barely strong enough..
a good, strong steam iron or kettle will do for small jobs but never really give the same results, you need strong steam, lots of it.

I have many techniques for this shape, this is one of my "short cut" methods, using the table top as a straight/flat surface, flipping the hat upside-down and rubbing the inside of the roof of the crown against the flat table top gets the top f your crown nice and flat.
I suggest removing the silk lining if your hat has it.or carefully pushing it aside while u do this step.

This can be done to wide brim hats as well, but not to wool felts, only felt hats marked "fur felt", they usually tell you inside the hat.
Wool won't work, and straw is even harder, although I've done it(depends on what type of straw, and I use a good deal of sizing(stiffening spray)

This is a little harder than the center crease or teardrop,
but as you practice, it becomes easier.

Using a ruler to measure how high the crown is will help a lot,
make sure it is the same height all the way around,
recheck the height of the crown all around the hat, at least twice.

I always suggest dusting the hat first, with packing tape, get all the lint and dust off before steaming. Always straighten the brim last..if u feel the hat is getting too wet and it is taking a while, set it aside by a fan if u have one, and let it dry periodically for 5-7 minutes, if the hat is too wet, it is becoming,"over-steamed" and it becomes useless, like a rained-on hat, it gets too soft.
Just let it set, and start again in 5-10 minutes, not much longer is needed. be patient, and don't over-steam it. Take breaks, examine it, and rethink your strategy before moving on.

Think of it like a sculpture, you correct parts until it looks good enough to meet your own standards, there is definitely such a thing as 'too perfect".
I like it to looked hand-shaped, not stamped out by a machine.

Don't expect perfection, they will improve every time you practice.
remember..
It took me years and years to get this down, and I'm still learning.
so expect to do a few bad ones at first, it takes time, and practice..
don't be shocked if you mess up completely!
I messed quite a few up at first, and as years went on,
I slowly discovered tricks and little short cuts to help me shape smoothly and efficiently.
After a few times u should get it down.

Do the pinches and creases without steam at first,..and pinch the felt gently..
and u can keep trying, and practicing without making any permanent shapes..
When u feel ready to go for it,, start pinching much harder and use the steam.
good luck and have fun!
