Happy Birthday Edmond Hall, truly one of the greatest clarinetists in all of Jazz History! This post presents two blazing solos by Edmond from a wartime recording session. The session never found its way onto a commercial recording until 1981, most likely because of the informality of the session. The full song title is “I Ain’t Gonna Give Nobody None of My Jelly Roll” and was composed by the team of Clarence Williams and Spencer Williams circa 1919. The group is an Eddie Condon assemblage with cornetist Wild Bill Davison leading forcefully. Oddly, clarinetist Pee Wee Russell is heard only in the ensemble choruses which clearly indicates this is Edmond’s feature and he certainly is feeling it aided by a strong rhythm section that includes the seldom heard Condon rhythm guitar. The full personnel are listed on the video slide. To me, this is hot Jazz clarinet at its finest! Enjoy!
