What is Stage 3 Colon Cancer?
Colon cancer is categorized as Stage 3 when the cancer spreads beyond the colon or large intestine and involves the surrounding lymph nodes. Typically, at this stage, the tumor penetrates deeply into the colon wall, often categorized as T3 or T4 on the tumor staging scale. Although rare, Stage 3 cancer may occasionally appear at T1 or T2 levels. Understanding the extent of spread is key to determining the treatment plan.

How is Stage 3 Colon Cancer Diagnosed?
The diagnostic process for Stage 3 colon cancer begins with a colonoscopy, where a biopsy is taken to confirm the presence of cancer. The biopsy results indicate the exact location of the tumor within the colon, such as the hepatic flexure, descending colon, or ascending colon. However, a colonoscopy alone is insufficient to determine the stage.
Advanced imaging techniques like CT scans or PET scans are crucial. These scans provide detailed informations.

Treatment for Stage 3 Colon Cancer
For most cases of Stage 3 colon cancer, surgery is the first line of treatment. The objective is to remove the tumor and surrounding lymph nodes with a margin of healthy tissue. Here’s how the treatment unfolds:
Surgical Procedure:
The affected section of the colon, along with 5-7 centimeters of surrounding tissue, is removed. The blood vessels supplying the tumor and lymph nodes are tied off to ensure complete removal. Depending on the tumor's location, the surgery may be referred to as a right hemicolectomy or left hemicolectomy.

Reconnection of the Colon:
Post-tumor removal, the remaining parts of the colon are reconnected. This may be done manually or using surgical staplers, depending on the surgeon’s preference and the case’s specifics.
Pathology Examination:
After surgery, the extracted tumor and lymph nodes are sent for pathology analysis. The pathologist examines the tissue under a microscope to determine the extent of lymph node involvement. This confirms the final stage and helps decide further treatment.

Post-Surgery Chemotherapy
If pathology confirms that cancer has spread to the lymph nodes, most patients will require chemotherapy after surgery. The decision to administer chemotherapy depends on:
The patient’s overall health and fitness.
The risk of recurrence.
The number of affected lymph nodes.
Chemotherapy is tailored individually, ensuring the patient’s safety and maximizing the treatment’s effectiveness.
