Social Security Disabled Adult Child (DAC) Benefit Explained | How Your Child Can Receive Up to 75% of Your Social Security

Did you know your child could receive 50-75% of your Social Security benefit through the Disabled Adult Child (DAC) Benefit? In this video, I explain how children can receive benefits based on their parent's work history if they are disabled before the age of 22.

Here’s what you’ll learn:

The DAC Benefit kicks in when one of the parents becomes disabled, retires, or dies. The child may start receiving SSDI based on the parent with the higher benefit amount.

To qualify, the child must be disabled before age 22, and applying for SSI at age 18 is the easiest way to establish this.

Every dollar received in SSDI will reduce SSI by the same amount, but your child will still benefit from this program.

After receiving SSDI for 24 months, your child will also get Medicare, while keeping Medicaid (as long as they meet Medicaid’s asset limits, which is crucial if they receive waiver services).

Unlike SSI, SSDI is all or nothing—if your child makes more than $1,550/month (2024), they could lose SSDI. Always consult with a Benefits Counselor for more info.
