Ep. 202 STARTING FIGURE #2 FOR THE MOSES MOSAIC!
Hey Everyone, welcome to my studio!
I have been commissioned by a church to make three mosaics that will go around the sides of a fountain, in between three spillways. They are all in the theme of Moses. Because the fountain is round, I will be working on AR fiberglass mesh with silicone as my adhesive. I am using stained glass and 24k gold smalti. The first mosaic is Moses Striking the Rock.
0:05 Recap - I show the design for Moses Striking the Rock in the desert with some people. I am working on Moses this week.
0:21 Here's where I left off last week. I have almost finished Moses - he just needs his feet. Then I will move on the next figure, which is at the opposite end. It is this woman in green drawing water from the spring.
0:50 Now that I have finished most of Moses, I want to save the glass I used and store it until I am working on Moses Parting the Sea.
1:44 I am working on Moses's foot, and I want to add a little notched detail on the toes. So I pulled out my old Taurus II ring saw and set it up, only to find out it was not working. The belt is not in good shape and I don't know if that is the whole problem. ANYWAY - I decided to wait and use the ringsaw that is in my classroom. So the toes will have to wait!
3:37 I am starting the woman in green by cutting out her eyes, which are dark brown. I construct the mosaic of her face on shelf paper with the sticky side up to hold the little details in place. Then I tape the top with mosaic face tape, cut it out and adhere it down with silicone.
5:18 I wash all the green glass that was in my garage as it is dusty!
5:43 I talk about the head dress strategy. I am using solid white, streaky white and bluish gray.
6:59 I start the head dress by making pattern pieces out of contact paper.
8:22 Once I have all the pieces for the bulk of the head dress, I remove the contact paper. Then I cut and adhere them one section at a time, adjusting the length of the pieces with my nippers as needed.
9:33 I show where my REAL border is. I divide the dress area between dark, medium and light tones of green.
10:23 Once I have all the pieces traced, it is best to take a photo as reference so it is not too difficult of a puzzle to solve in the end. I try to be strategic about placing the pattern pieces on the glass.
10:45 I realize I need glass that is much darker than the dress so there is more contrast. So I will add that darker green in some other areas as well.
12:10 Back to Moses's feet finally! I start gluing them all down in position.
13:01 I accidentally had a couple pieces of the sandal in upside down! Before the glue could set up, I noticed it and fixed it. Phew!
13:45 Here's how far I got this week: Moses is finished! And I got a good start on the woman in green.
That's Putting It Together, Ep. 202. Thanks for watching! See you next time.
