Are you tired of being tired? The same sound of the dreaded alarm every morning, struggling to get out of bed to tackle another day that you will waste, not doing things that you planned the night before and repeating all over again?
Well, I might be able to help you!
Hi, I’m Vik and just like millions of other people I’m also a serial procrastinator.
I used to spend most of my time in the morning struggling to get out of bed, continuously hitting the snooze button multiple times, wasting precious hours.
And once I finally got out of bed, I fell right back into the procrastination pitfall of checking my phone and social media. This was becoming a major issue.
Every night before bed, I used to make a to-do list for the next day, that included doing exercise, life admin and spending time to learn a skill, but every morning I used to spiral back to my old habits as if I was on this constant procrastination hamster wheel that I couldn’t get off.
But see, to overcome procrastination, the first step is recognizing the problem. I knew there was a problem and something had to change.
I started doing online research, watched hundred of videos and went deep inside the Youtube rabbit hole, and then, I came across Dr Joe Dispenza, (Quote research)
Dr. Joe Dispenza often talks about reprogramming one's life through changing thoughts, habits, and perceptions.
He mentions that ‘ If you want a new outcome, you will have to break the habit of being yourself, and reinvent a new self.”
Then I came across Dr Steven Pressfield, the famous author of one of the most powerful books ever written, The War of Art.
Steven Pressfield, in his book "The War of Art," talks deeply about the concept of "Resistance," which he describes as a force that prevents individuals from pursuing and accomplishing their true callings.
He mentions that ‘’Procrastination is the most common manifestation of Resistance because it’s the easiest to rationalize.’’
“The more scared we are of a work or calling, the more sure we can be that we have to do it.”
He mentions that as a writer “It’s not the writing part that’s hard. What’s hard is sitting down to write. What keeps us from sitting down is Resistance.”
Pressfield suggests that overcoming resistance is crucial to unlocking one’s potential and achieving one's goals. He emphasizes the importance of discipline, commitment, and perseverance to combat resistance and to actualize one’s creative visions.
Next person who has really helped me over the past few years is Cal Newport. He is an American nonfiction author and associate professor of computer science at Georgetown University. I came across him on the lex Fridman podcast where he talks about the importance of Deep Work and Time Blocking.
Ok, so I think now you have enough context about me and some of the individuals who helped me overcome procrastination.
Here are some of the immediate steps you can taken to stop procrastination.
No use of mobile phones when I get up. I just get up from the bed and leave the phone in the bedroom. By doing so I’m breaking an old habit and reprogramming my brain. Trust me, after a couple of days you get used to it.
Next, I understand how social media can consume us, so I have started to deactivate all the apps such Instagram and Youtube during the weekdays.
I have started doing DeepWork, where I get the maximum output from the hours that are available to me. Here is how to start:-
Choose a Deep Work Spot: This should be away from distractions. TV, Mobile
Set Clear Goals: Know what you want to achieve.
Eliminate Distractions: Turn off notifications, create a ritual.
Work in Time Blocks to break down the task into quarterly, weekly and daily chunks.
Take Regular Breaks: Short breaks can refresh your mind.
Now, I’m sure you will face a lot of issues such as resistance whilst doing the steps that i have mentioned above but remember that the battle against resistance is ongoing. It's not a one-time fight but a daily struggle. Be prepared to face it each day and use the strategies mentioned above to overcome it.
So in the end, I’m getting there. I’m getting better with my morning routine, and avoiding the social media traps. Time Blocking, snoozing social media, seeing resistance as a true enemy and trying to beat it daily has helped me immensely.
Remember, It is not about becoming a work machine. It is about gaining control over my time and my life.
Procrastination might be a common enemy, but with the right tools and mindset, anyone can overcome it.
