Synopsis of the Film-
लालच आदमी को क्या से क्या बना देता है……यही इस कहानी का सार है…….चन्द्रप्रकाश बेरोजगार है….उसके पिता के दोस्त ठाकुर साहब उसे नौकरी ही नहीं देते बल्कि रहने के लिए उसे घर भी देते हैं……घर में रहते चन्द्रप्रकाश शादी के समय ठाकुर साहब के गहने चुरा लेता है……..पर अन्त में पश्चाताप की आग में जल चुपचाप रात में उसी जगह गहने रख आता है……चन्द्रप्रकाश की अन्तरवेदना और उसकी पत्नी की मनोव्यथा का सुन्दर चित्रण है इस कहानी में…….मुंशी प्रेमचन्द की कहानी "चमत्कार ".
Chmatkar is a touching story which once again reposes faith in the goodness of human nature. Chandra Prakash is an educated young man from a well-off family but after his father's death, he and his wife find it hard to make both ends meet because Prakash is unemployed. At last, somehow Prakash gets the job of a tuor. His employer is a wealthy Thakur who employs Prakash to teach his 20 year old son. Just adjacent to his haveli, Thakur Sahib gives Prakash a place to live.
Prakash's sincerity and good behavior brings him close to the Thakur family. They start confiding in him. They discuss each and every problem with Prakash. As time passes by Prakash and his wife Champa almost become members of the Thakur family. Prakash is given all the responsibilities of making arrangements of Virendra's (Thakur Saheb's son) marriage.
It is when Prakash buys expensive jewellary for the bride that the demons of greed, selfishness and malice raise their heads. He at last steals the jewelley box. Everyone is aghast, no one as much as even suspects Prakash, not even his wife Champa. But Prakash takes the responsibility of the theft and leaves Thakur Sahib's place. He puts up in another house, though the rent is paid by Thakur Saheb himself who is deeply touched by Prakash's sincerity.
Thakur Saheb and his family's benignity and compassion accentuate Prakash's guilt, Champa too discovers the shocking truth, though she doesn't say anything to Prakash, yet the feels the bitterness creeping in her behaviour. And when Thakur Saheb helps Prakash in getting a good job Prakash is almost shattered.
On night he invites Thakur Saheb and his family to dinner and whilst they are at his place, he steal away, furtively enters Thakur Saheb's house and replaces the jewellary box in the bride's room. And when Thakur Saheb's family finds the jewellery box they are all amaxed. The thief has returned the expensive jewellery untouched. A miracle has happened.
When Champa comes to know of it she is ecstatic, she rushes to her husband takes him in her arms, lugs him as tears of joy trickle down her cheeks. She appears to have found her long lost husband.
