All Eyes on Paris with Australian Beach Volleyball player Zach Schubert

My next guest is first time Olympian for the upcoming Paris Games – Zachery Schubert.

The 28 year old from Loxton in South Australia first stepped onto the World tour in 2013 when he represented his country in the u19 World Championships in Portugal.

3 years later he played in his first senior event. He had travelled all the way from South Australia to Austria to play just one match, losing in the qualifier. But that didn’t stop Zach. Over the next 4 years he played as many events as he could with various partners. In fact he’s played with almost all of the best players Australia has produced over the past decade, at various times.

Then, in 2022, after a two year break during which he had double knee surgery Zach decided to team up with another athlete who was back home recovering from his own injuries, Thomas Hodges.. and the magic partnership began.

He and Thomas are also the current Asian Beach Volleyball champions

When he’s not on the beach, Zac is the CEO of Schubugs, one of Australia’s largest cricket farms. It started as a modest set-up in his garage, but now involves several shipping containers full of insects on the family farm just outside Loxton, in South Australia’s Riverland.

But for now, Zac has left the crickets in the care of his Dad, while he focusses on the Paris Olympics, a goal that seemed way out of his reach just a couple of years ago.

Going in as No.17 seeds Zac and his partner, Thomas Hodges are most definitely underdogs … but a team that the rest of the world needs to watch out for…
