Being comfortable hitting jumps on a mountain bike is a pretty cool thing. Now, if you're lucky enough to have access to trails and features like we have here in The OZ Trails, then hitting a hip jump is something you need to be ready for. The basics of jumping still apply, you just have to add in a few more key elements. Heck, you can even do it on an E bike like this Trek Rail 9.8. You ready to get hippy?!

The art of the hip. There are probably many different ways to extrapolate this particular move, so here's mine.

FIRST THINGS FIRST! It's a jump. So the jump basics still apply. You need to carry enough speed in, stop pedaling far enough out to get that firm base, and load into the take off to get as much lift and distance as you need. Now, this is where the hip adds some major nuance.

By nature a hip going to the right or to the left. These particular hips are made VERY well and have angled take offs. This means, as a rider, I'll be loading at an angle and generating lift in the opposite direction. This is a good thing and something that makes hip jumps super fun!

By loading in at an angle, you are now setting yourself up to rotate the bike on the imaginary horizontal axis. THIS IS IMPORTANT! Don't twist the bike in space, ROTATE it! How do you do this?

Well, keep the basics in mind and keep your hips over the bottom bracket. Once you're in the air, think about leading with that inside shoulder and using your outside hip to help initiate that rotation.

At this point, eye up that landing and ease 'er on in while matching the transition you're landing on.

Play around with it a bit and find that sweet spot! Let me know what you think!

PEACE OUT DUMPERS!!
