There is no such thing as a great solo with bad rhythm. Many musicians spend a lot of time thinking about scales, chords, voice leading, upper structures, and all of the harmonic aspects of playing music. However, just as a structured approach to learning harmony is very helpful, a clear and structured approach to the RHYTHM is just as important.

You've probably spent lots of time practice licks, lines, and solos. But how much time have you spent working only on rhythms? Unless you play drums, probably not enough. In this video I show a clear structure for how to develop phrases in a solo using nothing but a four measure rhythm.

I have found this technique to be very useful - it will force you to be creative in new ways, while always helping to develop the skill of playing good time - i.e. "Swingin'".

Of course the example I give in this video is meant to inspire your own creativity - try this exercise by composing your own rhythmic phrase. Experiment with different target notes or scales. Apply this to changing harmony. The possibilities are endless. Just don't forget that RHYTHM is what makes your melodies sound good - or not. As always I hope you enjoy the video!
