Barbarik or also known as Belalsena was the grandson of the second Pandava,Bheema and Hidimba and son of Ghatotkacch and kaamkantaka(warrior daughter or Asur Moora).From his childhood he was taught about dharma and bhakti by his grandmother Hidimba.One day he asked his grandmother about the easiest way to mukti (mokhshya) she replied that if an individual gets slain by The Vishnu (or any of his form)he shall get mukti. He decided to get killed by God himself to attain mukti by enraging him.From then on Barbarik did great penance and earned many powerful mahashaktis and ashtrasashtras. At the time of Mahabharat,he went himself alone to fight. Shri Krishna well aware of this approached him in disguise of a brahmin and questioned him about how he will fight. He pretended not to trust Barbarik’s power as he came all way alone(although he knew from the very first).Barbarik showed his power by aiming to make a hole at every leaf of a tree.Shri Krishna his two fallen leaves of that tree to test. To his amaze the leave he held was also holed by Barbarik’s aim! Barbarik further said that he will fight with the one who loses .Shri Krishna tried to convince him to support Pandava's as they were in dharma(although Barbarik knew as he was taught be his grandmother, he was strongly intended to get mukti by being killed by his god).Finally when Barbarik declined not to listen Shri Krishna’s words he was slain by sudarshan chakra. As god knew this he kept Barbarik alive to watch the whole scenario of Mahabhart.

And also Barbarika is folklore and word-of-mouth (moohboli) story. There is no mention of him in either Mahabharata or Harivamsa chapter 60-66 (both written by Sage Vyasa). Barbarika finds a mention in Skanda Purana which is a loose collection of folklore...
