Sugar beet: Breeding against Cercospora

What starts with tiny spots on the leaves can lead to tremendous yield losses in sugarbeet cultivation: The leaf disease Cercospora faces farmers worldwide with enormous challenges. Using classical breeding methods, KWS has succeeded in developing sugarbeet varieties with improved Cercospora tolerance and high yields. However, sugarbeet is not only susceptible to fungal diseases such as Cercospora, but also to various yellowing viruses. That's why Werner Beyer, Head of Resistance Breeding and his colleagues are working intensively to counter the pathogens with something effective.
