Man Gets Rear-Ended, Turns Minor Accident into Bizarre Standoff

“On 1/17/22, the following occurred while assisting the Florida Highway Patrol with a crash investigation where the suspect fled the scene.

James was located driving around the area of the accident. While speaking with James he requested we follow him to the Sheriff's Office to wait for FHP. my self and other Deputies followed James. As he turned onto East Milton Road, he stopped and began to make a u-turn. Fearing he may be attempting to flee, I initiated a traffic stop. James pulled over and he stated he now wanted to go to the Milton Police Department. Based on his actions and odd demeanor, I told him no. I explained he was officially not free to go until FHP could work their investigation.

Once FHP arrived, I informed Trooper Loper of the incident. At the time, FHP was going to arrest James for leaving the scene of an accident once they completed their crash investigation. Trooper Loper and Harrison began speaking with James, who was seated in the driver's seat of his vehicle, I was standing on the passenger side of the vehicle. James was Holding a box cutter in his right hand and was concealing it from the trooper's view. I also saw James attempting to cut his neck.

At this point, All units on scene attempted to have James drop the knife and exit the vehicle. James refused lawful orders. Due to the current dynamics and a altercation being imminent, I deployed my OC spray and sprayed towards James’ facial area. This distracted James, however he did not drop the knife or exit the vehicle as ordered. I then deployed a vaporized OC spray into his vehicle. Once the OC vapor took affect, James exited the vehicle with the knife in his right hand. James took a bladed stance toward myself, Deputy Carlson, Deputy Kessinger, Trooper Harrison, Trooper Loper. James then clenched the knife as if he was getting ready to attack. Deputy Kessinger saw this and deployed his taser. James fell and tossed the knife. He was then taken into custody.

Based on the circumstances James was charged with three counts of Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer. One count for each Deputy that was on scene.”
