Polymer Science and Processing 10: Elastomers and Semi-crystalline polymers

Описание к видео Polymer Science and Processing 10: Elastomers and Semi-crystalline polymers

Lecture by Nicolas Vogel. This course is an introduction to polymer science and provides a broad overview over various aspects of polymers, from synthetic methods, via polymer physics and materials properties to processing into products. The overarching aim of the course is to connect molecular properties and chain architecutres of polymers with resulting macroscopic properties.

This is the second chapter on bulk polymer properties. We focus on elastomers and semi-crystalline polymers. First, we investigate some peculiar properties of elastomers, such as heat evolution upon stretching and the negative thermal expansion coefficient under load. We then discuss the thermodynamic origins of this behavior. This analysis reveals that the elastomeric properties of polymers are dominated by entropic considerations, which is described by the term "entropic spring". Next, we discuss semicrystalline polymers, including the thermodynamic and molecular requirements to form such crystalline domains, the shape and morphology of polymer crystals, and the consequences for macroscopic properties, including thermal, optical, chemical, and mechanical properties.
