In the words of Nigerian painter; Ben Enwonwu, “It is setting the clock back to expect that the art form of Africa today must resemble that of yesterday otherwise the former will not reflect the African image”. Nigerian Mixedmedia artist Dennis Osadebe takes a jab at the popular idea of African art and draws from his experience with digital painting, video games, and augmented reality to provide a new lens to view the future of African art.
Dennis Osadebe is a Nigerian mixed-media artist, based in Lagos. After earning a BSc in Business Management from Queen Mary University, and an MSc in Innovation and Entrepreneurship from the University of Warwick, Osadebe began his journey as a self-taught artist and has been cultivating his artistic career since 2016.
Osadebe’s vibrant post-pop visual style is centered around the idea of reimagining Africa through the use of positive, provocative, and progressive imagery, and narratives, forging a dialogue where tradition meets invention and innovation. Osadebe has exhibited his works in renowned galleries and museums across the globe, including König Galerie (London), The Museum of Contemporary Diasporan Arts (New York), and Phillips Auction House (Hong Kong). This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
