Hand Trimming Techniques and Tools for Cannabis

Hand Trimming
The hand trimming process allows for attention to detail and for each bud to be treated in a unique way.
This allows the grower to best showcase the bud through selective trimming to help the bud show its best qualities.
While time consuming, the end result can bring in top dollar to make the process worth it in the long run.

Step 1: Remove Fan Leaves
Cutting away the fan leaves will aid in the air circulation process during the drying time.
This will also help reduce the chance for disease.

Step 2: Remove the Buds from the Branches
Pertaining to dry trimming, the buds should be removed from the branches after a few days of dry time.
Some length of supporting stem should be kept.
These buds should be transferred directly to a container with minimal physical contact.

Step 3: Fill You Trimming Station
Most growers prefer a tray and some will add a special light and magnifier to aid in the process.
Once you have a bud in hand you typically want to start at the base (near the stem) and remove the small branches that may exist.
These are known as “crows feet”
Then proceed to remove additional plant material around the bud, with attention to detail favored over speed.
Some trimmers will even use different scissors for various levels of detail
The goal is to go completely around the bud at least once to ensure consistency.

Trimming Scissors
Sharp and sterilized scissors are essential to any trimming process.
While each trimmer may have their exact preference the goal is to get ergonomic scissor that have a comfortable grip and this is where paying more may be better.
If you are going to be trimming for long periods of time be sure to get scissors that you find comfortable.
Some growers get some different types of scissors, to ensure they can have the proper tool for the different detail pruning that a bud may require.

Comfortable Sitting Location
This does not have to be complex, but should be comfortable for you.
Getting the chair and table heights adjusted and spaced are important.

Clean Tray and/or Surface
Many different types of trimming trays but all have the same purpose.
Watch the color as this will be your background as you trim.
Black can be preferred as it creates a good contrast.

Cleaning Supplies
This can involve both sterilizing agents as well as resin cleaners from the blades.
Goal one is to have these on hand, the second goal is to actually use them;-)

Optional: Light and Magnifier
This can be grower by grower dependent, but some prefer to have an external light source (can depend on the room) and a magnifier to allow the most precise cuts to be made as the bud is manicured.
