Isometrics are very unlikely to provoke pain. Isotonics (normal lifting) are a bit more likely. One of the reasons for this is the tempo of lifting. Depending on how you do reps, your tendon could behave elastically (increasing demand and being more likely to provoke pain) or viscously (decreasing demand and being less likely to provoke pain).
