Khechari Mudra, popularly known as ‘Tongue Lock’ is an integral part of Hatha Yoga Practices. As the name indicates, the tongue is locked by rolling in upwards and then backwards. Traditionally, this practice needed a lot of preparation, from a very young age, wherein few surgical procedures are performed on the tongue so that it can easily get into the nasal cavity and reach Ajna Chakra (the space in between the eyebrows). Keeping in mind, the complexity of the traditional procedure, Raja Yoga describes a simpler version of Khechari Mudra, which can be easily practiced by everyone. Even though Khechari Mudra is practiced mainly with Japa and different meditations, it makes an integral part of Ujjayi Pranayama and can prove to be one of the most important practices in controlling high BP. On a glandular level, it stimulates Endocrine Gland and Salivary Gland, thereby, playing a significant role in balancing ‘Thyroid’ secretion and in assimilation and digestion of food as it influences the faculty of taste because of being dominant in that area.
