English in a Minute: Pity Party

Welcome to English in a Minute! 

Everyone loves a good party! But maybe not all parties. Let’s go to a “pity party.” 

D: You would not believe my morning. First, I was late to the gym. 
A: You belong to a gym? Wow, you are so lucky! 
D: And then I forgot my coffee. 
A: I’ll buy you a coffee. 
D: And then…  
A: Dan! Let’s take a walk. Walking will bring you out of this pity party that you’re in. 

A “pity party” is when a person feels sorry for themselves. That’s the “pity” part. Maybe they feel unlucky, or that they have been treated unfairly. And then they talk about it a lot. That’s the “party” part. Except it’s not a party. It’s a downer.
