Served Illinois legislature from 1834 for 8 years till 1841
Retired from politics and worked as successful lawyer for Illinois
Re-entered politics in 1858 and contested for senate – lost to Stephen A. Douglas
Was elected president in 1860 - Fought a war to save the union and end slavery
Views on Slavery: “If slavery is not wrong, nothing is wrong”
5 days after General Lee’s surrender on Good Friday 14th April 1865 Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in a theatre by a fanatic
