Priti’s Kitchen
Raj Krishna Tower, opposite Kamat Nursing Home, Durgabhat, Ponda, Goa
Contact: 9823440014; Monday evenings closed

Priti’s Kitchen is located in Raj Krishna Tower, off Upper Bazaar Road in Durgabhat, Ponda. The turning from Upper Bazaar Road is near the Vithoba temple. The landmarks are Kamat Nursing Home opposite Raj Krishna Tower and Indian Overseas Bank in the same building. Right outside you will see the signboards for Priti’s Kitchen, and you will get tempted and feel extra hungry right away!

The restaurant is further in, on the ground floor. Inside is a small family-run eatery imbued with the spirit of Goa. Just beyond the delightful Goa mural on the wall, here we find Priti Sadekar in her kitchen

The menu here is short and sweet. They make a few typical Goan dishes which they make very well. We were at Priti’s Kitchen at lunch time so we tried the thalis. Very reasonable prices here. The Goan veg thali, available on Mondays and Thursdays, is just Rs 100. The fish thalis start at Rs 130 and the chicken thali is just Rs 170. Even the xacuti, cafreal and Goan chilli chicken are less than Rs 200 each. In fact there is only one item on the menu above Rs 200, and that too only Rs 210.

Maria and I were meeting after a while as I had been out of town on my annual holiday, so there was a lot of gossip to catch up on while we were waiting for our meal. As we talked, we could get the tantalising aroma of the prawns frying in the kitchen behind us. Priti’s Kitchen’s prawns thali has fried prawns, teesrio, prawn curry, bhaji and rice. The chicken thali has xacuti, omelette, salad, cabbage bhaji, rice and chapati.

Priti’s Kitchen opened here in Fonda shortly before the Covid pandemic, and while we enjoyed our lunch, we chatted with Priti about her life and the challenges she and her husband Satyajit faced in managing their family-run business through the Covid lockdowns

The food was tasty. This was another Ponda meal where we really felt like we are eating at home. The chicken cafreal was delicious and the xacuti was perfection. At Priti’s Kitchen, they top up your curry once you are done with the first portion. We finished with a great sol codi. We also enjoyed a delicious sitaphal rabri for dessert but we were so engrossed in listening to Priti’s recipes that we forgot to film it.
