Q: I'm trying to understand exactly what it is that's involved with playing guitar in a way that inspires more feeling. I know my scales and I can play some melody through improvisation. But, what I'm lacking is the feel. When I listen to Clapton or to Gilmour, they have serious feel. Could you explain how to naturally bring in more musical feel like they have? Thanks.

A: Typically, guitar players will start out performing melody and improvising by only playing the notes that they've memorized. Far too often, they'll limit themselves to only thinking in terms of playing patterns. Of course, the "shapes and patterns" are critical, because they relate back to what a guitarist understands as the correct places to place their fingers when performing a solo for a key of a song. While this approach is great in the early days, we also need to realize that once the patterns are memorized, the next step is to begin working just as much on playing with feel. The examples in this lesson are only the beginning. Listen closely to your favorite guitar players and copy how they play guitar with feeling. Selectively choose interesting ideas from their techniques and add those elements into your playing. Enjoy the lesson!
