Gram stains are a relatively crude but useful tool for characterising the broad categories of microorganisms present in tissue sections, based upon structural differences in their cell wall. In this video I demonstrate two alternative methods for Gram staining - the Bown-Hopps method and the Gram-Twort method. These methods differ in the choice of counterstain for visualising Gram-negative organisms. The importance of using control sections when performing Gram stains is also explained.
