Shadow boxing, and martial arts more generally, offer an incredible form of functional training. Martial Arts simultaneously build incredible core strength, explosiveness, body awareness, mobility, and control. They let you burn calories and condition your body WHILE learning a skill that's extremely fun and rewarding.

If you find running boring, or if you find HIIT too gruelling, give martial arts a try! You can hit a bag, shadow box, or spar with a friend. It also lets you go at your own pace: working on technique or going all-out.

Turns out that Grant agrees!

The problem is that people don't realise they have the option of starting martial arts training. The assumption is that you need a class or a teacher - that you need to have spent years honing your craft.

It's your body and no one needs to give you permission to use it as you choose! It doesn't matter who is watching and critiquing your form (why would it?). Of course, you won't be the best in the world at martial arts right away; but if your goal is to learn a bit more about yourself while actually enjoying your cardio... there's nothing stopping you! Don't let self-consciousness prevent you from exploring this amazing form of fitness.

Grant has provided a simple shadow boxing sequence you can add on to your very next workout to see for yourself. Start slow, be careful not to over-extend your elbows... and you can't go far wrong.
