Hello, this is the new Tanda of the Week, and this time we have a contemporary tango orchestra: Tango Bardo!

Tango Bardo is a quartet from Argentina with Lucas Furno on Violin, Juan Miguens: Double Bass, Santiago Polimeni: Bandoneon (replacing Mauricio Jost) and Hugo Hoffmann on Piano.

Their first recordings are from 2015, and they produced a handful of albums so far. Their style is unmistakeably energetic, and “razor-sharp” as one of my DJ colleagues described them. Also, note the glissandos of the violin which are kind of typical of the tango orchestras nowadays in Argentina.

In 2021 Tango Bardo recorded together with Roberto Minondi, the singer of Romántica Milonguera. We did a Tanda of the Week with them as well.
But in this tanda we have four instrumentals, around the theme “Tango Bardo plays Pugliese”

The first track - Chiqué - is also the opening track of their EP “4 veces Pugliese” which was released in 2018. Chiqué was composed by Ricardo Luis Brignolo, and although nowadays we associate this tango with Osvaldo Pugliese, who recorded it in 1953, it actually dates back to the 1920s. Apparently, Roberto Firpo was the first to record it, already in 1921, but it’s better known by Francisco Canaro (1929) and Julio de Caro (from 1930). Troilo and d’Arienzo recorded 'Chiqué' in the 1940s, but it’s Pugliese’s dramatic version that we know best, with its brutal opening notes... Tango Bardo stays close to Pugliese with their interpretation of 'Chiqué', but they do sound fresh at the same time.

And then the second track: ‘Patético’, a true Pugliese classic. Composed by Jorge Caldara, who at the time played bandoneon in Pugliese’s orchestra, and originally recorded in 1948. Tango Bardo plays a somewhat heavier version of Patético, with a double bass that’s very much present. But the violin is probably the star of this track. And yes, it’s all a bit much, but Tango Bardo keeps it together.

The third track of this tanda is unreleased as far as I know, so perhaps this is a track you haven’t heard before… It’s ‘Nochero soy’, composed by Oscar Luis Herrero, who played the violin in Pugliese’s orchestra. I got to know this track when Carlos & Mirella Santos David danced to it in the Mundial in 2019, where they reached the finals. 'Nochero soy' has all these typical Pugliese elements, including the yumba – always a dramatic effect. And Tango Bardo delivers a raw, spiced up version of it.

For the final track of the tanda we go back to the “4 veces Pugliese” EP. I bought it myself on iTunes, a few years ago, but probably the best place to purchase it is at tangobardo.bandcamp.com . We’ll put a link in the description below.

Now if you want to play a “Tango Bardo plays Pugliese” tanda and you don’t have a copy of Nochero soy, you can also replace it with ‘Negracha’ from their album ‘Del Sur’.

So the final track is ‘Yunta de oro’, composed by Pugliese’s long time bandoneon player Osvaldo Ruggiero. First recorded in 1957. Tango Bardo’s version lacks the subtlety of the original recording. Instead they seem to go for “more is more”, but I have to admit: it does work.

And that’s the tanda of this week by Tango Bardo. Not the easiest tanda to dance to, but fun for ambitious dancers that do like this kind of tango. Or just for listening.

So we have:
1. Chiqué
2. Patético
3. Nochero soy
4. Yunta de oro

Enjoy!
