Cairngorms loop part four

Day four, Bob Scott Memorial Hut to Edendon water.

After the tough and frustrating afternoon on day three we had a comfortable and very welcome night in the Bob Scott memorial hut. We were lucky to have the bothy to ourselves again, in fact we hadn’t shared a bothy all trip!

We set off the following morning with a fairly bad weather forecast, we were going to get wet sooner or later today. After leaving the hut we headed back down to the river Dee and the track out to the Red House bothy. By this point the weather had turned again and the rain was falling. We decided to take a break at the bothy and met a couple from the Newquay Forest who were also bikepacking but having a rest day. They were kind enough to make us a coffee, which was very welcome. 😋

We set off again into the worsening rain and our next destination was Glen Tilt. The trails were good even though it was very wet and slippery and some of the trail was pretty exposed. But the riding was fun and we made good progress. We stopped at the falls of Tarf where we broke open the trail cheese that we found a couple of days previously. In the pouring rain the cheese tasted great!!

Glen Tilt is a spectacular glen with good riding. I’d very much like to ride it again one day in the dry without the bags on the bike. We made good progress but I started to get quite cold as I was soaked through and found that my ‘waterproof’ jacket wasn’t really that waterproof. By the time we got to Blair Atholl we were both ready for some food and a chance to dry out for a bit. After a good meal in the pub it was time to set off again and find a camp spot for the night.

We rode for another 15 miles in mainly dry conditions and were just waiting to find a suitable spot to spend the night. We eventually found somewhere at Edendon Water and got set up for our last night out in the hills.

Overall it was a great days riding although extremely wet. 😁
