Paganini: Caprice No. 24 is probably one of the most famous and most difficult of his works. It consists of a theme, eleven variations and a finale, and requires a variety of techniques. The theme is a simple melody, but the variations make full use of scales, chords, tremolos, pizzicati, flageolettes and other superb techniques. Every section is a sight to behold, for example, in the fifth variation, where the left-hand alone plays chords while the right hand plays pizzicato, an astonishing technique. The finale is the climax of the piece, with a series of fast scales and leaps. The technical aspects of the piece tend to attract attention, but listen out for the beautiful melodies lurking in the midst of the technicalities. This is a masterpiece of Paganini's masterful playing technique and creativity, and at the same time a difficult piece that is a supreme challenge for us violinists.

Paganini (1782-1840) was a violinist and composer born in Genoa, Italy.

Caprice, op. 24, is composed of 24 short solo violin pieces, all written for his own performance. It was said that he hid or burnt his scores to prevent anyone else from copying his techniques. However, after his death the scores were discovered and published.
