Eimi Wakui｜P. Sarasate: Introduction and Tarantella

This is a small piece for violin and piano written by the Spanish composer Sarasate in his later years. The introduction is a gentle melody sung over piano chords, which gradually changes to a chromatic movement, providing a link to the tarantella. The tarantella is an intense 6/8-time dance, a scene in which the violin's virtuosity is on full display. Sarasate also arranged this piece for violin and orchestra for his own concerts. A tarantella is a fast-paced, violent dance of Neapolitan origin in southern Italy. It derives from the name of the city 'Taranto', from which the poisonous spider tarantula also derives its name.

Pablo de Sarasate (1844-1908) was born in Pamplona, Spain, and was a violinist and composer. He studied at the CNSM de Paris and ended his life in France. His style reveals Roma (so-called gypsy) elements in addition to his inherited Spanish and French traditions. Many composers of the time wrote and dedicated pieces to him. The Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, dedicated by Saint-Saëns, two of his three violin concertos, Lalo's Spanish Symphony, Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 2 and the Scottish Fantasy are particularly famous.
