Walk with me in Dhigurah - one of the beautiful local islands in the Maldives!
Dhigurah is one of the inhabited islands of the Alif Dhaal Atoll, where whale sharks live year-round. In the lagoon around Dhigurah, you can swim with manta rays, especially during the southwest monsoon (from May to November).
Dhigurah is a long, narrow island located 95 km from the capital city of Malé. It is 3 km in length, and its widest part reaches up to 250 meters. It can be reached by ferry (approximately 5.5 hours) or by speedboat (about 2 hours).
Only about 1/3 of the island is inhabited. This is the wider zone of the island where the harbor is also located. The island is home to just over 500 local residents. The remaining part of the island is covered with greenery and areas where locals grow vegetable crops. The main livelihoods of the population are fishing, boat building and tourism.
As on every local island in the Maldives, there is a football field that separates the residential area from the forest, which is nearly 2.5 km long. On the island there are shops, several local cafes, restaurants, as well as guest houses and small hotels. All of them are near the bikini beach of the island.
Walking through the palm forest and reaching the end of the island you reach the stunning sand bank that disappears when the tide is high.
