In this episode of The C Life, We question if sailing in Thailand is really worth the struggle due to Thailand's intense heat and jellyfish season. Stay tuned for the drama! #sailingthailand #thailandjellyfish #callingitquits
We were riding the highs of a new adventure the first two days of being on the boat. By the third day, it all had come crashing down, and we were not having fun.
We realized that this charter was not going as we expected and was getting worse.
First, the boat was extremely hot. Thai heat is nothing to scoff at. During the day, the temperatures would reach in the 90s, and it would be hotter in the boat. When we were initially looking at chartering the boat, they said the AC could be run at night. We thought that the temperatures during the day would be manageable, there would be a bit of a breeze, and we could get in the water to cool off. However, none of that happened.
On day three, we talked to the owner and explained that it was just too hot to be outside, and inside the boat, there was no reprieve. He was great. He agreed that we should be able to run the AC in the galley during the day. The only issue was when the cook, Guitar, was preparing meals, he would have the doors and windows open so that the galley would not smell. This, of course, made the galley hot. This typically wouldn't be an issue; however, there was no breeze outside to cool us off, which led to our next issue.
We wanted to sail. We had been dreaming of charting a sailboat for several years, so we had high hopes for sailing. However, there was no wind, and we motored everywhere! The sails only went up twice in seven days. If we had wanted a motorboat, we would have rented one instead. And with no wind came more heat. Typically we would jump in the water to cool off, but...
The jellyfish! Because this area in Thailand was experiencing a significant jellyfish bloom, the jellyfish got worse and worse everywhere we went. Of course, we conveyed to the captain several times that we needed to go south or away from the jellyfish. But they didn't speak the best English, and I am not sure they completely understood. As the captain, we thought he would talk with other boat crews and find the best spots to take us away from the jellyfish.
However, I got on FB groups and found the information. The owner and crew wanted to show Thailand and all the tourist spots. But again, when we explained to them that our purpose in charting this boat was to experience places in Thailand that tourists do not frequent, We were explicit that we wanted to sail and be in the water. But by day three, this was not happening.
Joel and I needed to make a decision. What do we do? We paid for this charter, which was not going how we wanted. So, we again talked to the owner and explained our concerns. He was great and said he would speak to the crew.
We have high hopes that things will turn around!
