“Mak muang” is how you’d say mango in Lao. This is one of the most popular dipping sauces for mangoes. It’s hard to describe the flavor because there’s almost nothing to compare it to, but if you like spiciness with your fruit then this dipping sauce is the right one for you. I think it’ll be very good with strawberries, pineapples, and other sour fruits as well.

Ingredients:
One small red shallot, sliced
2-3 teaspoons of red Thai chili flakes 🌶
3 teaspoons of roasted sticky rice powder
1 teaspoon of shrimp paste 🍤
2 teaspoons of padaek (unfiltered fermented thick fish sauce)
2 teaspoons of fish sauce 🐟
MSG to taste
3 teaspoons of sugar

This serves 1-2 people at most! Double the recipe if more people are eating

Food is most definitely subjective. Therefore, I’m not a fan of blindly following a recipe and not adjusting it to your own liking. This recipe leaves a lot of room for adding more of a certain ingredient if that’s your preference. For example, someone who desires a more savory dipping sauce might add more padaek (unfiltered fish sauce). It’s all up to you & your tastebuds. 👍
