Teaching social skills to children with autism is very complex. Even with hours of social skills speech therapy, if not properly assessed and planned for, little progress could be made. While I can’t you an entire video on autism social skills training, I can give you the top 3 mistakes to avoid when considering social skills interventions. Hopefully, with these mistakes in mind, you’ll be able to understand how to teach social skills to children with autism more effectively.

In general, as I’ve mentioned in other videos, it’s crucial for assessment, planning and taking data. Improving social skills in children with autism is no different. We want to start by assessing social skills and defining what social skills to target before trying to understand how to teach social skills. The other thing to keep in mind is that, while your child or client with autism is learning social skills, it may still take them time to socializing as socialization for autism kids is a gradual process.
