石岐位於中山市中部，是中山市的中心城區之一，總面積26平方公里。
現石岐街道於2000年6月由原中山市中區及北區合併而成。
名稱由來：據說在唐代以前就有“石岐”一稱，因煙墩山（又稱石岐山）原為石山，唐代詩人鄭愚在《泛石岐海》中就有“歧水正分流”的句子，後“歧”改為“岐”，取吉祥之意。
石岐舊稱仁厚鄉、香山縣（中山縣）第一區、石岐鎮、石岐市、中山市中區等，別稱鐵城，曾為原香山縣、中山縣、石岐市治駐地。
石岐於清代以前屬於仁厚鄉，清宣統二年（1910年）後改為香山縣第一區，1953年設立石岐市（省轄市），1958年設立石岐公社，1959年石岐公社改為石岐鎮（縣級鎮），1984年撤銷石岐鎮設中山市中區（分：煙墩區、岐江區、蓮峰區）。
原北區舊稱郊區（含西區除沙朗）、環城區（原東南西北區皆屬環城區）、仁厚鄉良字都。
石岐有著名的石岐乳鴿、杏仁餅、粉果金吒。此外，石歧雞也是廣東省八大優良雞種之一。

Origin of the name: It is said that the name "Shiqi" existed before the Tang Dynasty, because Yandun Mountain (also known as Shiqi Mountain) was originally a stone mountain. The Tang Dynasty poet Zheng Yu wrote in "Fan Shiqi Sea" that "Qishui is flowing separately". Later, "Qi" was changed to "Qi" to take the meaning of auspiciousness.
Shiqi was formerly known as Renhou Township, the first district of Xiangshan County (Zhongshan County), Shiqi Town, Shiqi City, Zhongshan City Central District, etc. It is also known as Tiecheng. It was once the seat of the former Xiangshan County, Zhongshan County, and Shiqi City.
Shiqi belonged to Renhou Township before the Qing Dynasty. After the second year of the Xuantong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1910), it was changed to the first district of Xiangshan County. In 1953, Shiqi City (provincial city) was established. In 1958, Shiqi Commune was established. In 1959, Shiqi Commune was changed to Shiqi Town (county-level town). In 1984, Shiqi Town was abolished and Zhongshan City Central District (divided into: Yandun District, Qijiang District, Lianfeng District) was established.
The former North District was formerly known as the Suburbs (including the West District except Shalang), Huancheng District (the original southeast, northwest and north districts all belonged to Huancheng District), and Renhou Township Liangzidu.
Shiqi has the famous Shiqi pigeon, almond cake, and powder fruit Jinzha. In addition, Shiqi chicken is also one of the eight excellent chicken breeds in Guangdong Province.
