I had a determined attempt to remove it (the body) on Thursday evening. I’m surprised nothing broke as it took an inordinate amount of force.
Now it’s apart it is easy to see why the chassis doesn’t drop out as it should; those two ‘shoulders’ beside the screws holding the motor cradle in place extend beyond the width of the aperture in the lower half of the boiler/tank!! You can also see the two lugs on the cab front face that lock under the tank moulding and required a flat screwdriver poked between the firebox and the inner edge of the cab front and then twisted. A loud ‘crack’ was heard and the fireman’s side was free!! Similar treatment at the driver’s side released that side, but how the cab front didn’t split I don’t know!
There looks to be enough space for the decoder and speaker so hopefully on Monday I can finish it off. Also fingers crossed it goes back together easily (there is a pipe and the reversing lever plus another rod to get back into the cab front locating holes!
Anyway, not heard from Bachmann yet.
Oh, the screws under the bunker came out complete with their fixings that should have remained in the bunker floor.
I am hoping that a decent size sugarcube will go in the smokebox because the bunker is essentially ‘out of bounds’ being a sealed box that has the fixings integral (except they came out with the screws!) with the bottom surface. Also, the ‘trough’ for the wires to pass under the cab is actually under the moulded cab floor which seems to be glued to the remainder of the footplate. Not very well thought out, and, to be honest, despite the consensus of opinion that ‘the motor upgrade is a big improvement’, I don’t think it’s any better at all than the original DJ Models version.
