In this video, we have discussed all points related to #colonoscopy, about the procedure and how it helps us.

We do colonoscopic procedure through the #colonoscope instrument, which is a very sophisticated instrument. Colonoscope machine has a monitor, a processor, and an insertion tube. At the end of insertion tube, there is a camera and a light source. Our main purpose is to examine the large intestine (Colon) through colonoscopy and hence its name. We insert the insertion tube through the anal opening and examine the large intestine completely.

The parts of the large intestine are the rectum, sigmoid #colon, descending #colon, transverse colon, ascending colon, and cecum. We examine all these parts of colon. During the procedure we get all the images and videos on the monitor through which we can thoroughly examine whether there is any pathology or disease. If we find any abnormal or pathological area, we can take #biopsy. We send the biopsy for histopathology, and we can gain further information from that.

Whenever we have lower gastrointestinal symptoms which are persistent, like lower abdomen pain or generalized abdomen pain, diarrhea, chronic constipation, or someone has lower GI bleeding or failure to thrive, or unexplained blood loss through the gastrointestinal tract, then colonoscopy procedure is very helpful.

Whenever we are attempting a procedure, we need gut cleaning so that we can visualize the intestinal mucosa properly. For gut cleaning, we use Polyethylene Glycol solution, which is given to a patient in a specific amount according to age or weight over a specific period of time, a day prior to the procedure. Colonoscopy procedure is done under IV sedation so we require 6 hours of fasting for solids and 4 hours of fasting for liquids.

Colonoscopic procedure normally take 15–20 minutes. If done with due precautions and done by an experienced doctor and under proper hospital settings, it's a safe procedure. Colonoscopy is done routinely and its a very useful procedure and gives lot of information and helps in solving and managing many gastrointestinal diseases.
