Feather Your Nest
(Kendis – Brockman – Johnson)
Played by
Lenzberg’s Riverside Orchestra
Edison 50711-L
(“78 rpm record” actually, 80 rpm)

Julius Lenzberg’s biggest hit was “Hungarian Rag,” for piano solo, but he recorded a large number of songs with his dance groups at least until 1923, with the musical style of the group modernizing as time progressed. This is not exactly “hot jazz” with Freddy Keppard, I know, but it gives us great insight into the types of dance bands that were playing in New York in the 1910s and early 1920s.

Johnson & Shirley (American Dance Bands on Records and Film 1915 – 1942) provide the following personnel:

Julius Lenzberg (director, possibly piano); unknown 2 trumpets, trombone, clarinet soprano sax, flute, two violins, string bass, drums (and I presume the cymbal crashes as well). New York, September 21, 1920.

I am wondering if that rather long saxophone solo at (1:15) is by Nathan Glantz?

At the risk of seeming too pedantic, I know we call these records "78s" but Edison usually recorded his "hill and dale" records (that is, the needle moved up and down in the groove instead of lateral cut ones wherein the needle moved from side to side) at 80 rpm. So I recorded it at 80 rpm.

This is one of the first records I ever had, but was in appalling condition. In the past couple of years I was able to locate one in excellent condition.
