Exploring The Pilbara: Red Dirt Roads and Karijini National Park | Half Lap of Australia: Episode 10 🏞️🌾

Welcome back to our Half Lap of Australia series! In this episode, we journey from Broome through the rugged landscapes of The Pilbara, making our way to Karijini National Park. Join us—Megan, Stuey, Evelyn, and Thea—as we experience the heat, red dirt roads, and refreshing gorges that make this region of Western Australia so iconic.

Day 27: We set off on a long, hot day of travel from Broome to Port Headland via the stunning Eighty Mile Beach. While the beach was beautiful, swimming wasn't an option due to the presence of catfish, sharks, crocodiles, and jellyfish. We arrived in Port Headland for the night, ready to rest after a scorching day with temperatures in the 40s Celsius!

Day 28: Our journey took us deeper into the Pilbara as we headed towards Tom Price. Along the way, we passed Wittenoom, a once-thriving mining town now a contaminated site due to asbestos. Driving through the Pilbara is a true adventure, with its red, dusty roads and encounters with massive mining vehicles—and of course, the random whirly winds! Our highlight was cooling off at Hamersley Gorge in Karijini National Park, where we hiked to the Spa Pool, although some camera troubles meant we didn't capture all the footage. Still, the gorge was a breathtaking oasis in the heat.

Day 29: We dedicated the morning to exploring Karijini National Park, starting at the Circular Pool and Dales Gorge Lookouts. After a short walk (with a snake warning sign for added adventure!), we reached the tranquil Fern Pool. Evelyn bravely swam under the waterfall, and Thea enjoyed Fortescue Falls, her favourite so far! This day was all about cooling off in Karijini’s beautiful natural pools before heading back to Tom Price to watch the AFL Grand Final.

Next Episode: We leave the red dirt behind and head towards the iconic Bullara Station before finally reaching the pristine coastline of the Ningaloo, where we enjoy more unforgettable adventures in Exmouth!
