The Gion Festival, famous for its splendor and splendor, is a festival of Yasaka Shrine with a tradition of about 1150 years.
In the old days, it was called the Gion Goryoe, and in the 11th year of the Jogan era (869), when an epidemic broke out in Kyoto and other places, 66 floats were installed in Shinsen-en to represent the 66 countries at that time. It started as a ritual to worship the gods of Gion, send a mikoshi (portable shrine), and pray for the removal of disasters.
The Gion Matsuri begins with the "Kichifuiri" event on July 1st and ends on the 31st with the "Natsugoe Harae" event, during which various Shinto rituals and events are held.
